Impress your man! Wear a ‘Mumtaz-Style’ Sari tonight!

The Mumtaz Style of wearing a saree still has many takers as the leading lady of Bollywood inspired the imagination of millions of young women with her unique saree-draping style that became a trademark in itself. The glittering navel-revealing saree that she wore in the movie ‘Brahmachari’ was quite well received and became a rage among young women in the 1960s & 70s.

In my opinion, the high number of searches that occur frequently in any search engine for learning the style of wearing a ‘Mumtaz-style’ saree is proof of the fact that the leading lady made an indelible imprint on the fashion consciousness of an entire generation. Mumtaz almost patented this style of draping a saree and it also stamped her entry into Bollywood as one of the leading ladies of Indian cinema.

Complimented with a small sleeveless blouse, the Mumtaz-style sari is tightly draped around the body in such a style that the pleats are avoided altogether and it hugs the body like a second skin, accentuating the curves of the female wearing it. In the Mumtaz-style drape, essentially one drapes the pallu twice over. The pleats are not exactly done away with, but yes they are less. The pallu is very short; it covers the bosom but is more tightly gathered (not pleated but gathered) & brooched on the left shoulder with little over six inches of pallu.The Mumtaz style sari is quite good for sarees having heavy or embroidered borders. It is one of the most innovative ways to wear a traditional Indian saree, though I would not recommend it this type of a drape for a ‘wedding saree

However, there are certain colors which you should keep in mind while opting for a ‘Mumtaz-style’ drape. Although you can wear any color saree in this style but certain colors like orange, pink, turquoise blue or any other light color would do justice to this type of drape. Light colors would not only make you look slim but also look quite classy as well. I would recommend the ‘Mumtaz-Style drape’ to ladies who have the perfect curves in the right places as there is no other Indian style saree drape  be it the Maharani style, Devdas style, Indo-western style that can  highlight the female form as much as the ‘Mumtaz Style’ drape can.

Try out the ‘Mumtaz-style’ drape today and be prepared for those admiring glances that are sure to come your way.

Helpful tips to preserve sarees!

Taking care of expensive sarees requires a great amount of care  and patience on behalf of the buyer. In the following passages, I have shared some valuable tips for maintaining Designer and Party Wear sarees made of Cotton, Chiffon Silk and Georgette with minimum investments in terms of time, money and energy.

* Cotton Sarees
As a rule of thumb, cotton saris should always be washed separately as their colour starts spreading with each subsequent wash  that might spoil other clothes as well. Immersing saris in water for long periods of time or drying them in scorching heat can also lead to color fading.  Starching Cotton Saris after each subsequent wash  helps in color retention.

* Chiffon Sarees
Chiffon Sarees  also  require care and maintenance just as cotton sarees  do especially during the laundering process. One should avoid twisting the sarees  during the  hand-wash process, instead  the sarees  should be swirled under a sink during the washing process  and pressed gently to squeeze out all the water and hung dry. Moreover, they should not be wrapped  too  tightly and one should avoid using sari pins as it might tear the fabric.

* Silk Sarees
Silk saris  are not only the most expensive element of any collection but  they are also the most delicate to maintain. To remove any kind of dirt or stain from silk saris, one should opt for dry-cleaning as hand-wash/machine-wash may strain the fabric. Saris having heavy zari or embroidered borders should not be hung for long as their fabric can get strained and may ultimately tear. While ironing these silk sarees, one should always take note of the  temperature  as  extra heat can burn the fabric.

* Georgette Sarees
Georgette saris being highly vulnerable to tear tend to lose their shape if kept hanging for a long time. It is  advisable to refold  these sarees from time to time as tears start appearing on creases if they remain folded in the same position for a long time.

I hope these tips prove to be very useful in maintaining your designer and party wear sarees in perfect condition for a  long time to come

Handy Tips To Preserve Your Saree Collection!

Sarees are integral part of India’s cultural mores and tradition and most Indian women tend to stock up sarees that suit their body type perfectly. Every saree that you buy or which has been gifted to you may have a certain set of memories attached to it. As a value conscious buyer, you would have definitely spent a substantial amount of money in purchasing net sarees or pure georgette sarees. But selecting and buying sarees is one thing and maintaining them in perfect condition for long periods of time is an altogether different ballgame.

Keeping aside your favourite Glass Tissue Sarees to be used on special occasions is a good way to avoid last minute panic before any event or function. It will also help you save yourself from a lot of hassle. If cotton saris occupy a substantial portion of your collection, then you should keep in mind that though they are easy to wear and handle, they come with one inherent flaw i.e. their color begins to disperse and it can lead to color fading. Cotton and Organza sarees may look quite classy and elegant but are difficult to maintain. Starching these sarees after each wash will ensure that these saris retain their shine for long periods of time.

When it comes to maintaining expensive sarees made from pure georgette or glass tissue, an important thing to keep in mind is that they should not to subjected to hand-wash or machine wash as that might twist the fabric causing unwanted wear and tear. Once these sarees have been dry-cleaned they should not be hanged in a cupboard as that might bear some unwanted creases on the fabric. A better approach would be to fold these sarees in a saree cover and place them in a drawer with some naphthalene balls to prevent moths from infesting in the cupboard. One should fold and re-fold these sarees from time to time as keeping them folded in one position for long periods of time will again bear the prospect of unwanted tears along the line of the fold.

 Adhering to these general rules will help you retain your sarees for long periods of time and even pass it on to your daughter.

Smart tips for buying Sarees and Silk Sarees

If you are planning to buy a saree, keep  the following points in mind  which will help you to find the perfect saree that will enhance your beauty.

  • If you have a voluptuous body then definitely looking slim should be your topmost  priority . Therefore, you should avoid sarees with big prints as they make you look heavier. Further, you should go for Georgette, Chiffon and heavy Mysore Silk sarees. Other than beautiful and elegant look, these fabric sarees will make you look slimmer too.
  • If you are short then you should go for sarees with small border or with no border at all.  Broad border sarees will make look even shorter and might ruin your entire appearance
  • Tall women should purchase broad border sarees as they would provide them an elegant and classy look.
  • If your body lacks curves then you should go for Organza, Cotton and Tissue Sarees. These fabric sarees give a fuller look to thin women.
  •  To get a lovely look, dark skin color women should buy sarees with dark colors such as green, maroon & dark pink etc.
  • Keep your body type in mind while purchasing silk saree. If you are overweight then Chiffon or Georgette Silk sarees will suit you perfectly. Also heavy Mysore silk sarees are a good option. These fabric sarees enhance your beauty by giving you slimmer look.
  • One should always check the weight of silk saree. The heavier the silk is, the longer your silk sari will last.
  • Make sure you are purchasing a pure silk saree as it lasts long and gives an elegant look to its wearer. To check the purity of silk, take few threads and burn them if it leaves a black powdery residue and an unpleasant smell behind, it is pure.
  • If you are planning to get a silk saree having zari work over it, make sure the zari is pure. Otherwise, it loses its sheen and turns black, ruining the entire look of saree. Also, it is advisable  not to go for gold zari as "pure gold" zari doesn’t exist. It is basically gold coated silver wire which has silk thread in its core.
